Guest Artists: Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Andrea Bavouzet, Piano
Join the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra for a captivating evening of exciting live music!
Francis Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos in D Minor
Poulenc’s charming tongue-in-cheek simplicity is a facade for deeply expressive music in this work where he portrays life in all its aspects–crude and vulgar as well as mystical and beautiful. This highly unusual concerto for two pianos features the husband-wife duo of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Andrea Bavouzet.
Maurice Ravel: Concerto for the Left Hand
Ravel’s composition for one hand achieves astonishing full sound. Multi-award-winning French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet performs this tour de force that showcases the extraordinary–and exclusive–use of the left hand. The concerto is vibrant in its representation of the forces of good and evil. The piece was commissioned by the brilliant Austrian concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I.
Piotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E Minor
Tchaikovsky had an incredible innate gift for melody, but he struggled initially with the larger-scale symphonic form. In the Fifth, he fully grasps symphonic logic and shows a mastery he had been searching for for years. Displaying simplicity and sophistication at the same time, this work was a major shift in Tchaikovsky’s ability to consider himself as a serious composer.
