Guest Artist: Carter Brey, Cello

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra’s 100th season continues with another blockbuster performance that will leave you breathless!

Benjamin Britten: Four Sea Interludes from “Peter Grimes”

One of last great composers of opera, Britten has a lyrical approach and a keen sense of drama. These four haunting scenes capture the physical and emotional atmosphere of the sea.

Robert Schumann: Cello Concerto in A Minor

Carter Brey, principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, takes on this formidable work, one of deep strength and emotion. The three movements take us on an emotional journey and are played without interruption. Schumann composed the enigmatic concerto in just 15 days but did not live to hear it performed.

Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition

A literal promenade through an art exhibit, Mussorgsky composed this as a memorial to his friend Viktor Hartmann, a Russian painter. A colorful depiction of the fantastical and sometimes macabre paintings, Mussorgsky wrote this as a solo piano piece. This orchestration by Maurice Ravel is by far the most popular of the work’s many arrangements.

The NBSO is a superb professional orchestra that performs with internationally renowned guest artists, annually presenting a 7-concert series of classical and pops music and a 4-concert chamber music series, as well as providing nationally recognized educational programs for the children of South Coast. For $10 tickets for children and students under age 22, please call or visit The Z box office, 508-994-2900. For discounted season tickets, please call the NBSO office at 508-999-6276.
