Join the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra as we bring our 100th season to a close with one of the greatest symphonies of all time. Featuring soprano Karen Slack, mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer, tenor Yeghishe Manucharyan and baritone David Kravitz plus the Back Bay Chorale.
Leonard Bernstein: Chichester Psalms
Some of Bernstein’s most accessible concert music. This vibrant, even jazzy exploration of the roots of the composer’s Jewish heritage is based on the beautiful poetry of The Book of Psalms and merges text sung in Hebrew with Christian choral tradition. Bernstein composed each of the three movements around one complete psalm, with excerpts from a paired psalm. The end result is a contemporary choral work that is bold and brassy as well as contemplative and peaceful.
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor
One of the greatest symphonies of all time. After its booming start, Beethoven is uncharacteristically gentle in this work, and his tender Ode to Joy in the final movement is unforgettable. With its themes of hope for humanity and brotherhood, the Ninth encompasses the greatness that is Beethoven.
