Hector Berlioz: Le Corsaire

Evoking swashbucklers at sea, this high-spirited overture is both fiery and sentimental. Its boisterous nature is both surprising and unexpected from Berlioz.

Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto

Sibelius doesn’t waste a note in this colorful orchestration. His lineage is that of Beethoven, with whom he stands as the bookends spanning the Romantic century. Martin Chalifour, principal concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is featured in this technically demanding work.

Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 in E Minor (“New World”)

Though written by a Czech composer, this is an iconic American symphony and, ironically, the first symphony defined as American. Dvořák composed the work during a discontented three-year stay in America, influenced greatly by his mentor, Johannes Brahms, along with inspiration from the sounds of his new world and his native Bohemian folk tunes.

The NBSO is a superb professional orchestra that performs with internationally renowned guest artists, annually presenting a 7-concert series of classical and pops music and a 4-concert chamber music series, as well as providing nationally recognized educational programs for the children of South Coast. Fado is a feeling, a sentiment, more than a set of notes.  Embracing both traditional and contemporary styles of Portuguese Fado, fadista Tania Dasilva will take the Z stage for the first time this season, accompanied by guitarristas António Lima, Abel Lima and Pedro Pimentel. Discriminating fans of roots music in southern New England have known it for years. At long last, the rest of the world is catching on to the fact that guitarist Paul Rishell and harmonica player Annie Raines are among the most earnest and entertaining blues artists active today. You’re in for a treat as Paul, Annie and their band Mojo Rodeo perform acoustic gems and slow burning rockers in a wide range of blues styles, from the syncopated acoustic guitar wizardry of Blind Lemon Jefferson to Chicagoan “Little” Walter’s swinging amplified harmonica.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Starring the award-winning actress, singer, and dancer Jasmine Guy, and the acclaimed Avery Sharpe Jazz Trio, Raisin’ Cane celebrates and honors the legendary voices of the Harlem Renaissance through text, song, music, movement, and imagery. The words and thoughts of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. Du Bois and many others, became the voice of a new generation of African-Americans looking forward but still struggling with the past and present. These thoughts, songs, and images are woven into a panoramic experience that spans this extraordinary outpouring of artistic endeavor that encapsulated the essence of 1920’s Harlem. Raisin’ Cane is a window on this critical point in American history, and its lasting impact on modern hearts and minds.

Linked with this performance is The Z’s pre-performance book club discussion of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. 6PM Free and Open to the Public.

Felix Mendelssohn: Elijah

Considered the equal of Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn tells the dramatic story of the Biblical prophet Elijah. Known for his symphonies and concertos, this ambitious, vivid and gripping composition is one of Mendelssohn’s most familiar works and marks the climax of the young composer’s career. Mendelssohn imagined Elijah as “[e]nergetic and zealous, but also stern, angry, brooding, in striking contrast to the rabble you find both in court and in the populace — indeed, up against the whole world — yet borne aloft on angels’ wings.” Tragically, not long after the hugely successful premiere, Mendelssohn died at age 38.
